Privacy policy

In one sentence

Bitácar does not collect, transmit or share any of your data. Everything you log stays on your phone, except for the backup Android may keep in your own Google account.

What is stored and where

Everything you enter: vehicles, odometer readings, expenses, services, check-ups, receipt photos and preferences.

It is stored in a local database inside the app's private storage on your device. We run no servers and there are no accounts: the only thing that can leave your phone is the Android backup explained below.

The Android backup

Android can keep a copy of your database in your own Google account backup and restore it by itself when you reinstall the app or move to a new phone. The operating system does this, not us: the app still makes no internet connection of its own.

On Android 12 or newer, that copy is end-to-end encrypted with your phone's PIN or screen lock: neither we nor Google can read it, and if your phone cannot encrypt it, nothing is uploaded. On Android 9 to 11 it is encrypted that way only if you have a screen lock set, and on Android 8 or older there is no end-to-end encryption, so Google could read it. If that is not enough for you, turn the backup off in Android settings and rely only on the backup you export yourself.

Your photos are NOT part of that copy. They only travel when you move data directly from one phone to another, which is a local transfer between the two devices.

You can turn it off whenever you want in Android settings, under Google and then Backup. If you turn it off, the only copy will be the one you export yourself.

What we do not do

  • We never send your data to any server, ours or third party.
  • We use no analytics, no advertising and no trackers.
  • We do not share or sell information to anyone.
  • We do not require an account, email or phone number.
  • We do not access your location, contacts, microphone or browsing history.

Bitácar Pro purchases

If you buy Bitácar Pro, the payment is processed by Google Play with your Google account. We never see your card or payment details: Google Play only tells the app whether this account has Pro, and the app stores that on your phone.

To check it, the app sends nothing to any server: it asks the Google Play app on your own phone.

Permissions and why

  • Camera: photograph receipts and vehicle condition. Requested only when you tap Camera.
  • Photos: attach images you already have. Requested only when you tap Gallery.
  • Notifications: remind you about upcoming service. Requested when you set up the app or enable reminders.
  • Vibration: lets the reminder vibrate. Android grants it without asking and it gives access to no data.
  • Run at startup: schedule the reminders again after the phone restarts, because Android clears them when it turns off. Android grants it without asking.
  • Keep awake: so the phone does not fall asleep halfway through scheduling a reminder or updating the widget. Android grants it without asking.
  • Network state: declared by Android libraries the app uses (the one for reminders and the one that updates the widget). It only tells whether there is a connection; it cannot connect. The app has no internet permission.
  • Icon badge: show the number of pending services on the icon, on phones from some manufacturers.
  • Google Play billing: buy Bitácar Pro inside the app. Android grants it without asking and it gives access to no data.
  • Photos you attach are copied into the app's private storage and are never uploaded.

Error diagnostics

If the app fails it records the error on your phone, under Settings and then Recorded errors. You can read it in full and decide whether to send it yourself. Nothing is transmitted automatically.

Your data is yours

  • Export: Settings and then Full backup produces a zip file with your data and photos.
  • Delete: Settings and then Delete all my data removes it permanently.
  • Uninstalling the app deletes everything it held.
  • You do not need to ask us to exercise any of these rights, because we hold no copy of your data.

Minors

The app is intended for people aged 18 or over. Even so, it collects no data from anyone, whatever their age.

Changes to this policy

If a future version changes this behaviour, for example by adding optional cloud sync, it will be announced in the release notes and will require your explicit consent before it is enabled.
